MARKÉTA IRGLOVÁ
(Music & Lyrics) Actress, musician, and songwriter Markéta Irglová was born on February 28, 1988 in Valasské Mezirící, Czechoslovakia [now Czech Republic]. She gained significant recognition for her work in collaboration with Irish musician Glen Hansard, with their song from Once, “Falling Slowly,” earning them an Academy Award for Best Original Song. From a young age, Markéta had a passion for music. At the age of seven, she began playing the piano, and at nine, her father gifted her a guitar, which she used to compose her own songs. Irglová was acquainted with Glen Hansard from her childhood, as her father assisted him with concert organization. It was Hansard who came up with the idea to form the duo “The Swell Season”, which marked the beginning of their collaboration. In 2006, they released an album under the label “Overcoat Recordings” and soon after, received an offer to play the lead roles in the indie film Once. The film is set in Dublin, Ireland, where a lonely street musician meets a girl who completely changes his life. Together, they perform his songs, getting to know each other better, but ultimately, the love that was supposed to start never does. The filmmakers of Once placed special emphasis on the music, which played almost continuously throughout the film. Each song was written by Irglová and Hansard specifically for the film, and they had to re-record each song during production due to budget constraints. Despite its low budget, Once received rave reviews from critics who praised not only the music in the film but also the performances of the musicians, for whom these were their debut acting roles. In 2007, the film’s main song, “Falling Slowly”, was nominated for an Academy Award. During the filming of Once, Irglová formed a close relationship with Hansard, and they had a two-year romance. Irglová was married to Tim Iseler from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, Irglová moved to Reykjavík, Iceland where she met Icelandic music producer Sturla Míó Þórisson (Sturla Mio Thorisson) while recording her first solo album, Anar. They later married and now have three children together. Irglová speaks fluent Icelandic and is a dual citizen of the Czech Republic and Iceland.
